About:
purveyor of the evolving musical artform of beatjazz. Beatjazz is, in technical terms, "multi-elemental Improvisation". what this means is that by marrying technology (specifically software capable of creating "racks" of virtual synths and looping software) and old school woodshedding (ie practicing your $*%&ing ass off), Onyx creates long form improvisations in the aestetic of a DJ set; beats, break downs, horns, keys...everything, from layering and deconstructing live improvisational looping. all the parts are either "made up" on the spot, or memorized, but there are NO pre created elements other than raw sounds (check out the "keeping it real" video.

I created this style (although live-looping has been around for the better part of half a century) because i had become bored with the state of live electronic performance, especially now, in the ableton era. it has all become overly technologically enhanced karaoke. and after years of playing with DJs, which taught me the hows and why's of a proper dance music set, i was losing the desire to create and perform.

Now, i spend every waking moment creating sound structures that will inspire close improvisational inspection upon performance. that and practicing every scale known to man. I am seeking artisitc purity thru creation rather than regurgitation and this path feels like a powerful direction, though i' only figured out how to do it 9 months ago.

the Fishermans Wharf sessions

well, this is my first full set of live "Blips". I had an especially fruitful week playing down at the wharf this week. As i mentioned before, I record everything i do in the background and pick thru the resulting recordings when i get home. well, this week i ended up with a massive amount of live recordings. you can judge the quality for yourself, but i am VERY happy with them considering that they are all live and i had no preconception about what i'd play before i actually started playing. t… Continue

All of my audio posts will be live "blips"

just for clarification. I dont call my live musical output "songs" or "tracks". I refer to them as "blips". have you ever seen those sci-fi movies where there is a "blip" of the radar, and then its gone? that's what these represent. when i perform my beatjazz live now, i improvise 98% of it, and record everything, so even though i could recreate some of the better stuff, each performance is just a blip that was there and then gone. now, some of these blips are fucking sick (to me at least), an… Continue
