Afta 1 - Nightlight (stream)

18/20. 4th in beat serie 45 of the great label Melting Pot Music . After the released of Kill Bill/Drama by Suff Daddy, Ole Woam/Don’t Stop by Brenk and the amazing Groo/Luv 2 Luv by Baptman, here is the 4th part produced by the original beatmaker Afta-1.

Two tracks for this 7inch that will make a buzz. The mystical Nightlife, dark and fluid, and the minimalist The Time In Between.

A mix of clever instrumental hip hop beat, mystic and organic keyboard, soulful musicality. Class and sophisticated, sprinkling funk fragments, electro, even cosmic soul. To compare, Afta-1's music reminds Flying Lotus or even J Dilla. Influences so benefit that you can feel.

You would have understood that Afta-1 evoluates in another dimension and another planet to create this sound from elsewhere. Respect!

Snowman Jack - The Cold War (stream)

18/20. His collaboration with the label All-City Records (again!) for the series 7x7 have left a good mark. We can say the same for his paticipation on the production of the great album First Of All of Shawn Jackson.

The new EP Late Night Drive by the excellent beatmaker from Detroit Snowman Jack, was released this month with the label Exchange Bureau Music.

We can find on it Guilty Simpson in good shape and Dj Rhettmatic on the track Late Night Drive, the same track remixed by The British Knights, and two enormous instrumental dirty fatty beats worthy of Perskryptshyn and his crew Jack Sample Pros.

An EP like an introduction for a coming album that should be released in coming months. If productions are as satisfying as those of this EP, so I predict the best for the next opus. A successful operation.

Aqeel ft Shafiq Husayn - Wake Up (stream)

18/20. Prince + Funkadelic + Digital Underground + Jack Splach = Aqeel

Formule mathématique qui définit la musique de ce jeune MC et beatmaker d'origine afro-americaine et résidant en Espagne.

Et avec Aqeel, le funk serait-il définitivement de retour ? Avec des artistes comme Sa-Ra Creative Partners ou encore Platinium Pied Pipers, cela confirmait le bien fondé du revival 70's dans la constellation hip-hop.

Une voix qui rappellerait presque le Prince flamboyant, un groove indéniable, lourd et puissant sonnant comme les délires cosmiques funk de Georges Clinton.

Le label Hollandais 4lux ne s'y est pas trompé et signe le premier EP d'Aqeel Wake Up, disponible depuis le 21 novembre dernier. Un EP où l'on retrouve Shafiq Husayn du band Sa-Ra Creative Partners à la production, ainsi qu'un remix de Syrafin.

Sans conteste, on retrouve le groove gras qui suinte dans les productions de Sa-Ra Creative Partners et qui caractérise ce funk futuriste, dynamique et explosif. On ne peut qu'applaudir la prestation d'Aqeel, en attendant la sortie prochaine de son premier album.

Hudson Mohawke - Polkadot Blues (stream)

20/20. PAY ATTENTION TO THIS AMAZING TRACK. Isn't it a brilliant intro ? If an artist has illuminated this year, for sure that's him. From Ooops! to his 6x7 at All-City Records, he succeed in musicality, searching for a perfect beat like a scientist, Hudson Mohawke is the hottest producer around the World.

Announced and expected since long time, he is back with a new EP Polyfolk Dance, release planned for the 19th January 2009 and signed on the very known label Warp. 6 tracks with multiple influences : R'n'B, instrumental hip-hop, P-funk and electro.

Only 2 tracks are already available on the website Bleep.com. Overnight and the powerful Polkadot Blues, immense tracks showing the talent of this eminent beatmaker.

You would have understood that the future of hip hop depend on Hudson Mohawke. He doesn't make hip-hop. He is hip-hop. That's the best argument to convince you to rush to get it.

Onra - My Comet (mp3)

19/20. Dernier volet de la série 7x7 beatstrumental du label All-City Records. Après un tour du monde vinylistique des meilleurs beatmakers, le label Irlandais pose ses valises en France pour la troisième fois, et c'est Onra qui s'y colle.

Brillant compositeur et talentueux beatmaker, Onra lie étroitement r'n'b, et hip-hop sur les deux tracks qui composent ce nouvel opus. Dans un groove aux sonorités nostalgiques, My Comet fait office d'hymne électro-soul agençant avec harmonie : vocaux cosmiques, clavier p-funk, groove punchy, et sophistication.

Tandis que Shhhhhhhh à l'ambiance noire et sombre sonne comme un long cri chaotique et guerrier. La basse lourde omniprésente rajoute un peu plus de noirceur à la track.

Au final, les productions sont novatrices, soignées et travaillées à la fois, une créativité qui manque cruellement aux productions hexagonales. Alors, le futur de notre hip-hop est entre tes mains, Onra.

DnS - Gum (Daz-I-Kue Remix) (stream)

18/20. Gum ou quand le hip-hop funk d'Atlanta rencontre le son West London. Une alchimie redoutable qui à la première écoute transformera votre chambre en un immense dancefloor.

Dipolomew et Stan Steam alias DnS (Do Not Sleep ou DipNSteam) cultivent leur différence, invariablement tiraillés entre un hip-hop rugueux et démonstratif et le funk festif des soirées d'Atlanta.

Une complémentarité et une technique qui permettent à ces vétérans du microphone de jouer des coudes avec les plus jeunes, habitués à ridiculiser leurs aînés dès la date de péremption dépassée.

La track Gum, plus qu'une agréable surprise, et sublimée par un Daz-I-Kue en pleine possession de son talent, tirant le meilleur du son originel, entre hip-hop et funk cosmique. Un remix énorme.

Emanative ft Liz Elensky - When On Earth (stream)

19/20. Que dire de la musique d'Emanative ? Que l'on y retrouve de troublantes similitudes avec la musique des 4hero, et comme le duo, trouvant ses racines dans le groove de Charles Stepney ou de John Coltrane.

Nick Woodmansey, batteur, percussionniste et tête pensante de ce projet, flirte avec le vibrant When On Earth, à un jazz nouveau, résolument frais et mélodique. Après la sortie de son premier album Petite Planète, le revoici de retour avec un nouveau single disponible depuis le 20 novembre dernier et tiré de son prochain album Space programmé pour le début de l'année prochaine.

Le résultat est enchanteur, porté par les envolées vocales mélancoliques de Liz Elensky, qui renforcent l'ambiance orchestrale dégagée par When On Earth, lui dessinant une aura mélodique digne des plus belles productions de Sun Ra ou encore de Pharoah Sanders. Prometteur et aérien, le jazz a retrouvé sa source. A suivre.

19/20. Continuation of his triptych available since the 24th of this month, for this event Flying Lotus has invited friends and virtuosos of beatmaking for a replay of his tracks.

6 tracks from his album Los Angeles, accompanied with Martyn, Mike Slott, Ras G, Nosaj Thing or his FLYamSAM partner Samiyam.

Samiyam's version is particulary singular. The combination of all these elements is new and personal, that shows the perfect musicality knowhow of his friend-partner.

Till the release of a mix for the serie Dj-Kicks of the label !K7 planned for 2009, you should get this hip-hop instrumental jewel. Only good heavy groove and bounce on your ears. Unseen.

18/20. Once again, soul music brings me in an unexpected sphere, travelling from electro to a futuristic hip hop.

Creator of a subtle and adjusted groove, Leon King puts in evidence his talent, singer as well as musician. This disciple of J Dilla is also fan of Stevie Wonder, is just so well on a MPC, a guitar or a bass, but also on the microphone.

He delivers with ingenuity a first track The Digital Church, combining with genius urban soul, hip hop, languorous voice, energetic keybord, and communicative spirituality.

You may say is it extraordinary ? Yes, it is. A star is born in the constellation of soul, with the aim to enlighten us.

Himuki ft Rasco - Keep On (Grooveman Spot Remix) (stream)

18/20. The EP Sunrare's Vol.2 released last summer is the perfect exemple of Japanese huge talent in the worldwide hip-hop game. I mean real hip-hop.

We can find on this EP Knot Impressed & Sam Judah, T Flow, also Grooveman Spot aka Dj Kou G for the amazing remix of Keep On Himuki from his first album My Book.

A jazzy remix worthy of heavy and punchy productions of Dj Premier, added to the incisive and fluid Rasco flow.

An excellent way to developp your musical knowledge beyond frontiers. Fresh!
