Interview Miles Bonny part 2 (the end) (read) (...)

N : Stay true to you are is the thing. do you understand?

Miles Bonny : I understand thank you.

N: I am surprised by our conversation...

Miles Bonny: how so?

N : in a positive sense. I really like what you are saying.
So let’s go back to your work. You have been releasing recently the compilation "Works 1 : Shadow from my past", Can you describe this project?

Miles Bonny: I learned much about being an independent artist while I was a member of a 2 man group with an MC named Joe Good. The group was called SoundsGood, and we released 2 albums.. both are on itunes and in various stores around the world. We were very well liked and we made great music. At the time I was solely the producer and beat composer. Joe Good rapped and did all vocals. After Joe Good stopped rapping, I decided that I still wanted to release my beats and I started singing over them and created "Smell Smoke?" through a process of simply recording my voice over them and slowly constructing songs and getting to know what sounds I wanted to create. Since "Smell Smoke?" has been released.. I’ve been singing over other producers beats. However I still have many many many beats from the past that I enjoy and that I feel must be released. There are too many to record vocals over.. so I decided that I wanted to quickly release them in a series of albums called "Works".

N : like a sort of soundtrack of your life...

Miles Bonny: "Works 1" is the first of the series.

N: can you describe the general atmosphere?

Miles Bonny : "Works 1 : " Shadows of my past" is the first release of its kind for me. It is very breezy... light in feeling, but a little funky. Lots of shakers and hi hats keeping things moving. It feels like springtime. My second will be "Works 2 : Bangers Can Wait" and that will be out in a month or two. That will be filled with hip hop bangers.. many people may like it more than 1 since it is more in-your-face hip hop tracks. big tracks.
There will be 4 this year from me

N: very busy... If I have understood, it is gonna be released on Melting Pot?

Miles Bonny : however I have extended the concept to others in the Innatesounds crew and they are releasing Works albums as well. These are all on Innatesounds.

N : ok. who for instance?

Miles Bonny : Leonard D Stroy, Reggie B, Daru, beatbroker, Joc max...and more
On My Works 1 album.. it says "W01" on the cover.

N: I have noticed how much you are involved in the Innatesounds Crew. You are the founder ? right?

Miles Bonny: it is a sort of label...Leonard D Stroy has the 2nd release in the Works series for Innatesounds however it is his 1st. So this is called Leonard DStroy "Works 1" however he has "W02" on the cover since its is the 2nd in the Innatsounds series. The next will be my "Works 2" and the cover will say "W03" since it is 3rd in the Innatesounds series.

N: ok

Miles Bonny: yes, I am the founder. It started with SoundsGood as the main group, and has recently expanded into a crew of about 15 artists.

N: What surprises me it that there is so many hip hop connexions in Kansas City? How do you explain that?

Miles Bonny : Well, I think that this many good artists may exist in other cities... However this group of artists is very serious about constantly improving and holding themselves to a high standard. We are learning from and working on a level that is equal to anyone in the world.

N: In the future, do you have any collabs with artists on other labels?

Miles Bonny : There are already a few songs I have finished that will be released this year. Actually many releases will come out this year.

N: Is it possible to give some names?

Miles Bonny : first, I sang on a song produced by Spinnerty (he is from California) that is called "Time to cut" and it will be released by a wonderful gentleman in Philadelphia on 7"o on Junior RecordBreakin.

Then I have a song I sang on and played trumpet on. Produced by Suff daddy, called "Late night suff" The Suff daddy song will be an EP released on MPM (Melting Pot Music)

I also have songs recorded with DJ Day and Kutiman.

N: I’ve listened to "late night stuff". It is quite different from the "closer love" song. There is another song which I find amazing is "Running back Words" If I could describe your style, it woul be jazzy + intense.

Miles Bonny : I’m just growing as an artist. I have so many things I know I am capable of and simply haven’t expressed yet. It is hard for me to realize what I have created and what Ideas I still have in my head that haven’t been presented to others yet. Because in my mind, they are already complete ideas.

N : I understand

Miles Bonny : I mean ALREADY created.. versus the ones that demonstrate sounds I know I am capable of that I havent recorded for others yet.
My next Ep will be produced by BRENK and will be on Melting Pot.

N: Brenk? never heard about him...

Miles Bonny : Brenk is a producer I learned about through Melting pot, another great producer. Then I have an entire album I will release on Innatesounds called "INcense & Wine" which I am very excited about.

N: And when?

Miles Bonny: The ep is being recorded now.

N: interesting! you are very creative...

Miles Bonny : (shrug) lots of people are.. they just dont create often enough. It is in all of us.

N: yes! you just need to believe in you and your skills and love yourself...

Miles Bonny : I agree. it is simple. However many people dont have a model of how to relax and just be themselves.I don’ t blame them.. they just don’t know it is possible.

N: yes but very often, you prefer to hate yourself and blame everybody around you.

Miles Bonny: yeah but as my dad would say "that’s just misunderstanding" They don’ t know. Life is easier when you are yourself.

N: I think this is the journey , "you" are just blocked by your fear, and negative thoughts...

Miles Bonny : yeah.. as I get frustrated with the state of the USA and Bush and the environment etc... and personal path and meaning of life.. I realize that we CANNOT know the meaning and have the answers otherwise we’d die.
As it is said the only thing to fear is fear itself. Fear is a choice along with all other reactions.

N: interesting! like what you are saying. all this reminds me of Oprah’s shows! don’t make fun at me!

Miles Bonny : naw man, I just watched Oprah today. she is doing good things.

N: To finish, what hat are your favourite picture, favourite video?
What image, or video would you like to share with the readers that will enable us to know more about your personnality? what impact did they have on you ?

1. Favourite Picture

Miles Bonny: Ummm my dad backstage at the Majestic Theatre in New York.. where he has played since it opened in 1986. I used to hang out there a lot.

2. Favourite video(s)

Miles Bonny: Video... would be...this is hard..umm

"Yes I do" is good. thats basicaly my life at home aside from recording and working the day job. But I do really like the Mingus and Monk documentaries

N: ah ah!

Miles Bonny :
1. "Beneath the Underdog" = Charles Mingus
2."Straight No Chaser" = Thelonius Monk

N : It is pure jazz !

Miles Bonny: It’s real. Of course to some extent both of them may have been chosing to play a certain created role… however largely it was authentic and expressive. raw. I am a lot more raw and up-front and clear than I think people think i am.. if they’ve only heard me sing on a recording.

Here are the videos Monk (documentaries)

3. 10 favourite songs

N: If you were stranded on a desert island, what are the 10 vinyls would you bring with you?

Miles Bonny : wow… at this point… I’d say this is very much inflieuced by the extensive record-searching and music-listening. I’ve been doing in the last few years.

1 - Tom Brock "I Love you More and More"
2 - Charles Mingus "Mingus Plays Piano"
3 - D’angelo "Voodoo"
4 - Aretha Fraklin "Rare & Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign of The Queen of Soul"
5 - Rogier Van Otterloo "On the Move"
6 - Art Farmer "Gentle Eyes"
7 - BB Dixie Duo "demo" (a group my dad started with friend and tuba player Bill Stanley to teach kids in school about Dixieland jazz. I recently recorded the tape onto cd
8 - Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain"
9 - SoundsGood "Biscuits & Gravy"
10 - Blue Mitchell "African Violet"

I’d add a Roy Hargrove album in there but he is on "VooDoo"
