Future musics

always interesting to hear what people are using in their studios - especially with the range of software available now.

in the mashibeats lab - which is writing and production only, no mixing.. we're looking at

logic 8 / macbook
motu 896HD audio
akai mpc3000
rhodes 73 mark II stage
korg radias
roland juno 6
korg polysix
arp omni II
roland sh-2000
ritm II which desperately needs repairs
korg triton extreme - only really gets used for general midi style sounds/parts
korg electribe - sadly never use the drum machine, but quite like resampling breaks through the tube preamp
yamaha 01v
dynaudio bm5's

and the obligatory turntable and wax... :)

on stage it's a cut-down selection of that list: rhodes, radias, mpc3000, juno or polysix and my favorite effects pedals: the kaoss pad 2, moogerfooger ring modulator and the akai headrush H2.

just started checking out an abelton demo and loving the vibe of that... gotta get the full software and delve into it properly.

oh shit, rubbing elbows with the big boys!! ha, heres my set up:

dell dimension L800r (hand me down from about 8 years ago)
fl studio 4
audacity
(1) vestax easy trax portable turntable

only bin "producing" for a few years now, from an "lets see if i can do more with less" approche... i figure the groovy ends justify the means, so to speak...

not to veer off topic, but i wonder how much a "shity set-up" will reflect in your beats; how much does a "shitty set-up" have to do with creative limitations, or audiance accessability even?

one thing im conscious of is that your equipment combination and how you use it will largely define "your sound"?! anywho ...

there is a certain "quality" aspect to your gear. the crappier it is, the more skill is required to overcome or even utilize the "crap factor." i'm speaking mostly about sound quality. if you're a great engineer (or have access to one) you can use the "low tech" sound to your advantage if you so desire, but good luck trying to get an 8-bit string section sample to sound like 4hero's live musicians. if you want to go for the grunge though, you're in like flynn...

the weak link in my setup that bugs me the most--my monitors. that is the area i'm most ashamed of. if you can't properly hear what something sounds like, all the processors in the world don't help much. i had a long-term loan of some decent studio monitors and had to return them when i moved--i can hear the difference in my productions. fortunately, i have some friends who have a great setup and when they have time to help me properly mix tracks i am a happy man.

that said:

ibm thinkpad t41
windoze xp
ableton live 6
reason 3.5 (i really wish that redrum, dr. rex & nnxt were available as vstis!)
cubase sx2 (doesn't get much use as it makes my laptop sweat too much)
wavelab 5 (essential for me!)
audacity (a lot more useful than i ever imagined)
cm303 (computer music's 303 emulator)
cm505 (computer music's analog drum synth)
various freeware plugins (vst fx/vsti - it's amazing how good some of these are!)
various commercial plugins (bbe sonic maximizer being most memorable at the moment)
m-audio radium 49 controller keyboard (what's up w/no *aftertouch???*)
m-audio 02 controller keyboard (for travel--fits in carry-on luggage, woohoo!!)
serato scratch live (most of my music is on my laptop)
2 technic 1200s mk2 (although i'd love the mk3--that center detent bugs me, but i don't want to lose the quartz lock, either.)
*cough* numark sm-1 mixer *cough cough*
varioUSB audio interface (for recording my serato sets)
200-300 pieces of vinyl (survivors of the "relocation giant sell-off" and a few newly acquired things)
*cough* my gf's stereo system of unknown age for monitoring *cough* (i told you my monitors sucked!)
battle-tested sennheiser hd 215 headphones (mostly for dj'ing)

I alway love to know what people are using!

At the moment I am using
G4
Reason 3
A pair of broken Sony earphones
no keyboard
& some trusted wav samples..
Ghetto set up... yes, but it has forced me into learning how to re use & create from the same sounds &and breaks etc!

It's all about what the producer is capable of doing rather than a room full of expensive equipment!!!

Will be upgrading to logic 8 and the world of VST's shortly as well as a keyboard!
Keep an ear to the ground for when that happens....Will be interesting!

Going back to NZ next week and will be picking up my sax while Im there, that should annoy the neighbours. Adding some brass to the live action.
