Wow thats deep C,
Its also funny, because whenever we do stuff in west so many people ask "Why don't we do stuff in south, we don't like coming to west". Then when I send out an e shot saying I'm playing at Satay with you guys, no one turns up.

Your right again C there is so much music out there that needs to be heard. We could of easily opted for a Soul or a Hip Hop night at Mau Mau, but no. All of The Rock are Jazz fans so we said 'Cha' lets rock that. Low and behold tomorrow is our 4th Anniversary at Mau Mau.

Maybe we need to take music back to the house party and rebuild it again, whether it be bruk, Hips, Soul or Jazz and plant seeds again. Remember there was a time when R'n'B and Hips weren't in clubs.

The Law doesn't make it easier too.

Shame:((

LOL.. Interesting debate!!
We started Broadcite in South west London in November '2000' & for those of you hat came down will know that we had the venue road block for over 2 solid years .. people in south London want the music & te vibes.. Its the Venue's & clb managers that have driven most promoters out of south London! Thats Fact..
If your not playing commercial house then its cutains for you , unless your happy with the back room..
last time we played south was in Babalou [Brixton], Great space & sound. Another one off 'Ram session' with Marc Mac [4Hero] + MC MG & crew.
Do you know what the mangement said at the end of the night ''great night guys but too DARK for us'' and he wasnt talking about the light or the sound.
Now 1st reacion is knock this punk out BUT to be honest we had to respect the guy for being honest... most venue managers are not!. My point is South london has been damaged by bad press due to violent R&b nights so anything too 'black' wont see the light in most venues south of the river!! Period.....
Broadcite has a proven track record so venues are aware of us but most will still only committ to 2 or 3 'Broadcite' sessions..
East london clubs are much different due to most venues having a natural footfall so promoters have a much better chance of keeping a regular position, Hence Broadcite 'Basement sessions' @ Gramaphone almost 2 years (monthly slot) ...
ITs up to you guys.. But we still love the rawganic vibes that we get in the ''South''

BROADCITE @ DEX club with PHIL ASHER [Restless Soul] Saturday March 15th .... BE THERE an Spread the WORD !!!! Peace 2 all*

You know that!!
Almost brought out the dutty south in us trust me....!
But its all in how they put it... 2nd hand as if it was comming from the Top!!
Now also understand the police (5 .O) Had allot to do with this also..
They told venues in Brixton to shut down all black nights''' truth
This all came out in a long meeting with Babalou [Brixton]
The manager @ the time was real '' and honest ... Most people dont know this..
Although Broadcite is not exclusively a black night we have a huge 'Black' & ethnic following as well as a very mixed crown BUT this is still as big risk for these venues who are affraid of being shut down by the local council... its Fuxked up!!
I mean the cheek of it ''Its too dark 4 us'' in BRIXTON.. LOL
Louw dem make dem gwan.....
We bringing it back t South LONDON '08
watch dis space .. Peace

CU there Cyndi....
TY .. we were asking ourselves the same question for a minute... its deep'
Then realised its bigger than us!! The average venue in London will be happy to give up mid week low key nights but 'weekends' are reserved for the deep apparently 'soulful' House, coke sniffing crowd 'standard'.. Now 8 years promoting clubs in London you dont have time for the amount of 'Bait' stories i could tell you.
We always twist things up - North / South / East & West ...!
Chat soon guys
Peace TR

yes,

for those who think drum solos are boring - check sheila E live - she is great.

Brixton gigs - hmmmmm so many years - so many observations.
Venues even recently asking me to remove the fist from keep the faith flyers presumably not to upset 'anyone' lol (i didnt agree to take it off btw ;) )

Looking back further - its these social breakdowns which caused the original Brixton Riots in the first place, back then with the Police often coming in from other non london areas to work in such inner london areas for the extrea inner m25 higher pay, bringing little or no understanding, or wish to get some of different communities.
Then after the riots, the myths, the non reporting that it wasn't only Black people taking part in those riots. & then more riots in the 90s, more inquiries and on...

I feel what's going on in Brixton now is like what happened to Notting Hill in the 80s - the re-re-gentrification process.
While in Portebello Rd these days or at the Ritzy - sometimes i am thinking - am i in the homecounties here??!! lol
& that in it's self is not the problem, it the intolerance and represssion some of those people bring into such areas regarding their new neibours.

Yea - urban 75 - i stumbled across that site by accident a few years ago on the net - what a tiresome site that was! - i have to say some of their regulars were extremely un-friendly and i stopped going on their after around 2 posts (or was i banned? i cant remember lol) - but i did manage to add before i departed: such people are really NOT welcome at any of our KTF events.
Or anyone else who has an instinctual hate of overt black culture (or hate of any other culture for no good reason).

& yea the Brixton house and hard dance scene seems to continue almost in a parrell universe hardly ever connecting with much of its surroundings.

As for Jamm - i know these places change hands and managers a lot - but within the last year on enquiring of the music policy it was:
No RnB, No Garage, No Reggae, No Dancehall........
hmmmm. At a guess the "right type of Soul music" is tollerated as long as it doesnt cross a line.

I love playing in South London, tho paradoxically when we do finally sort a South venue to play - i get emails from South London regs voicing privately - i want to come - but is it going to be alright? not just youths in there acting ghetto. - This is sad and really frustrating and continues the circle IMO.

But these problems with club owners and managers are not just a problem in Brixton, or South London - i think it just stands out so much more ironcally when it happens in Brixton - which is socially changing once again...
before the white flight in the 60s it was a middle class area in the 20s so once again history is going round in circles, people moving in, people moving out....
On that - the hearsay is a lot of the 70s and 80s Brixton people have moved further out out to Croyden, Kent, other places due to property prices and other social factors.

Funky Munky had a great live music monthly there run by some friends called Organics - it was a great live music night full of raw energy - but i think politics with the venue + the usual blood sweat and tears it takes running events has put that on hold for now.... tho they were saying last night it will be back soon...... so watch that space for that one.

The Whitehouse is a venue i like, but in the last year or so has gone more & more down the house, house and er......anyone for some more house? no actually i think id rather go in room 2 where i can hear some 130 bpm house ,only music policy:) lol i suppose to be fair since its existance its mainly been a house venue - but its output of eclectic music has nearly dissappeared
I am hoping that will change though...
As with a lot of these venues, its not the building or even the people in there often - as said by Cindi its the same old DJs managing the venues and implementing the same old music policies with in line with their dj sets and often hinted or blatently stipulated racial guidelines IMO.
Out of the older ones (age 30 + and over ages) - some of those people hated soul & reggae music in the 80s and only came into "dance" music after they saw more white fronted acts presenting it (this one could go on for days and it probably will cause i know we had some threads like that on the old bugz board) - but that is how i feel about it and IMO how we've got to where we are in clubland all these years later going through many eras (jungle, ukg and now the re-definitions of funky house - and yes music like Bruk bubbles on through some of the latar eras under most of these clubbers radars...).

Broadcite - i see this is your last official do before summer - so will def try and reach.
Noting that it doesnt start til 11pm - also on the same night over in Camberwell at the as forementioned by Cindi - the RedStar some of our UKSoulJam - a - fam are starting a new monthly at the redstar - the return of the mighty Soul Lounge fam as a reg event - we have a good few south people in the fam - so i am keeping my fingers crossed.
So people - come down for a pre-broadcite warmup @ Soul Lounge @ the redstar, camberwell (details to follow in the email newsletter...) - where you will see some excellent improvised live music + good vibes, (and lifting a phrase from a Acres flyer i just read) - they will be there to "rave and behave" - so will i, guitar and drums in hand. to support the cause. :)
